Learning from Indigenous knowledge and leadership: Inspiring business models for nature and people

Hosted By: UNEP-WCMC

Achieving a just and sustainable world requires transformative change. The IPBES assessment of business impacts and dependencies on biodiversity highlights the central role of businesses in driving this change and calls for a fundamental shift in economic activity and business practice. It also recognises that the values, structures and practices of Indigenous Peoples and local communities already align with this goal. As such, Indigenous-led businesses offer examples of what transformative change could look like for other business models. This session will bring together businesses, financial actors and Indigenous peoples to explore Indigenous economic systems and business models, focusing on existing examples of Indigenous businesses delivering positive economic, social and environmental outcomes. The session will also consider how businesses and financial institutions can better support and partner with Indigenous Peoples and local communities—while also applying people- and nature-positive principles in their own companies.
