Debating nature risk: real macroeconomic threat or overhyped narrative?

Hosted By: UNEP-WCMC

Can we really say that nature is a material risk to businesses, and one that will materialise in the short term? How can we concretely make the case for this, and what more support might we need? Combining a traditional debating format with roundtable breakouts, this session looks to provoke and then problem solve in equal measure.

First, hear our teams debate the motion: ‘This House believe that nature is a material macroeconomic risk that will negatively impact businesses within the next 3 years’. Thinkers from across the civil society, academic and private sector worlds have been tasked to debate this issue – and not necessarily taking the sides that you might expect!

Next, we will break into smaller roundtable discussions to dive deeper into the topic. How do we – NGOs, sustainability practitioners and champions – concretely make the case for the material macroeconomic risks that nature could pose to business and finance? What tools do we have at our disposal and where are we still facing gaps? Participants will be invited to share examples from their work, where they have successfully or unsuccessfully tried to integrate nature-related risks into the decision-making of their respective organisations.
